The market has known for months that there were some massive option-related stop-losses below the previous lows at 79.75 and unfortunately those losses were triggered at the most illiquid time of the day, NY close/Sydney open. The market probably moved 3 times more than would have been the case were both Europe and NY in full flow.

A little scary how you would now owe the broker $129,247.31. One would think a margin call would be initiated regardless of a gap down.

What gap? This dude lost his money fair and square. That's what you get when you have 5 open trades of 1000 lots each and get a margin call. I guess the stopout level must be 100% or even more.

I'm not stating that the loss was unfair. And it was likely there was no stoploss set.
The only way you can end up with a negative balance is that there was no price available at the point when the margin call had to be activated, i.e. gap.
