The U.S. dollar was higher against its major counterparts in the New York session on Monday, as the nation's retail sales increased much more than expected in the month of March.

Business inventories in the U.S. increased by slightly more than expected in the month of February, according to a report released by the Commerce Department on Monday. The Commerce Department said business inventories climbed by 0.4 percent in February after coming in unchanged in January. Economists had expected business inventories to rise by 0.3 percent.

Homebuilder confidence in the U.S. came in flat in the month of April, the National Association of Home Builders revealed in a report released on Monday. The report said the NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index came in at 51 in April, unchanged from March and in line with economist estimates.

A report released by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York on Monday showed regional manufacturing activity has contracted at a slower rate in the month of April. The New York Fed said its general business conditions index climbed to a negative 14.3 in April from a negative 20.9 in March, although a negative reading still indicates contraction.

The market exhibited relative quietness in yesterday's trading session as investors positioned themselves ahead of Friday's release of the PCE index.

At the outset of the week, market attention is squarely focused on the upcoming release of the Fed's preferred inflation measure, the PCE index, scheduled for Friday, alongside remarks from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell following the release.
