Yesterday I noticed a bunch of open trades in the negative, the all seemed that have been closed today for a loss.
Is that how this system is meant to work?

Was the platform turned off today? or is it a cache thing? There where no trades taken today, that looks odd when you look at the history and how many trades were taken every day since the beginning.
