Trading without Stoploss, can send you packing

I am a manual trader and I always use stops, not so much to protect me against adverse price moves, but as part of my money management and lot-size calculation.My stop is based on nearest support/resistance plus a buffer equal to ATR/6. I then calculate pips between stop and current price, then convert to dollars. I apply 2% to my account balance, then divide this value by the dollar value of pips between current price and stop to calculate lot-size. Whether I trade 1 lot or twenty lots, I know that if my stop is hit I cannot exceed 2% of my account balance. And if my stop IS hit, then price h...

Your stop-loss should be equal to your risk percent. If you risk 2% per trade, this means that your stop-loss, if triggered, is equal to 2% of account funds. This risk percent has nothing to do with the amount of capital you trade. That is, it is not the maximum funds you commit to a trade, but rather, the maximum funds you are prepared to risk (lose) per trade.Say you have $1,000 capital. Your risk percent is 2% or $20 on $1,000 capital. This means that your stop-loss should not exceed $20 in order to meet the 2% capital rule. Now, suppose the difference between your entry price and nearest s...

Cheers, fxprofiler. Agree...there are significant factors affecting global markets at present, and this almost certainly impacts execution of trades. Thanks again!

Have noticed slow execution on some trades, which is a concern when the market is moving fast. Otherwise quite happy so far. One benefit not mentioned here, which I discovered by accident, is the Aslan Group rebate program. Monthly rebates are paid directly to your PayPal account, and they add up. Have already received my first rebate!

You got me. I am exposed. How did I ever manage to quadruple my account in less than a month? Can you show me the error of my ways?

Have you performed any correlation studies between the economic factors and the currency pairs concerned? For example, if UK interest rates rise by say 0.5%, whilst US rates remain on hold, what is the likely percent increase in the GBPUSD? Further, is there a time-lag between the interest rate rise and the GBPUSD rise?I previously traded interest rate futures, and economic data correlation proved quite helpful in forecasting direction, range of forecast move, and timing. Would be interested in hearing from forex traders performing this analysis, and the results achieved.

Set a Takeprofit of 15-20 pips within the OrderSend function (second 0 after slippage):Double SL = 20*Point;Ticket = OrderSend(Symbol(), OP_BUY, Lots, Ask, Slippage, 0, SL, "Buy(#" + MagicNumber + ")", MagicNumber, 0, DodgerBlue);

I have used Ichimoku Kinko Hyo for about 18-months and it works for me. I combine IKH with Heiken Ashi and MACD, and apply to 1-hour and 4-hour timeframes. My stop-loss is set just below the Kijun Sen (uptrend) or just above (downtrend), and this trails the Kijun Sen. Exit occurs if stop-loss is hit, or Tenkan Sen crosses the Kijun Sen. Heiken Ashi colour helps time my entries, whilst MACD confirms. At first sight IKH appears complex, but it is actually a very simple method to use. Want to learn about IKH? My strategy combines Ichimoku Kinko Hyo, Heiken Ashi, and MACD on 1-hour and 4-hour timesframes. Money management is provided by an EA that I developed to calculate stop-loss at a percentage of account funds, with available account funds divided by stop-loss to calculate lot-size.

It's the same everywhere you go. Makes me laugh loud especially when I read statements like "holy grail", "never before revealed secrets", "100% per month guaranteed", and "strictly limited offer and then this opportunity is gone forever." This is both amusing and irritating to us, but can be financially devastating to the newcomer. We need to weed out these parasites!

I have used it many times as an aid to building EA's, and I agree with Steve that it is a good place to get started. However, you will still need to study MQL4 and other programmers work to become proficient.

Don't go beating yourself over the head. Instead, congratulate yourself for actually DOING what many others only TALK about doing! You've taken the plunge, and like me, blown your account. Welcome to the forex initiation ceremony!There is some great advice given above, and in particular that given by fortress. You need to get the psycholgy right, and this means gaining a good working knowledge of money management. Your knowledge of money management, and the employment of trading parameters resulting from money management, will give you the ability to trade without fear, hesitation, and...

So true Forex Wizard. Although I would personally rank them as follows:1-system (10%), 2-money management (30%), and 3-psychology (60%).The psychology of trading - fear, hesitation, greed, and euphoria - are extremely dangerous emotions for traders and must be removed from day-to-day trading activity. But whilst we all know this, there does not seem to be any real guidance out there as to achieving this aim - that is, how do we control these dangerous emotions?Money management is the solution, which means that psychology and money management work together hand-in-hand. If the euphoria of a pre...
