I’d add execution quality to that list. A strategy can look fine on paper but if you can’t stick to sizing, stops, and defined conditions over a large sample, it falls apart. For me the hardest part early on was not the setup, it was respecting risk the same way on trade 1 and trade 50.

It’s skill based, but I wouldn’t call it a game. A game has fixed rules and a fair playing field. In FX the conditions shift with liquidity, news, spreads, slippage, and sometimes broker execution, so your edge is how well you manage risk and execute over a big sample size. Luck shows up trade to trade, but over time it comes down to process. If you’re over leveraged or emotional it turns into gambling fast. If you’re consistent with sizing, stops, and repeatable setups, skill starts to matter a lot more.

I get the point, but this feels too absolute. A rules based strategy can be executed manually with a checklist and hard risk caps. Automation can remove some emotion, sure, but it also adds model and regime change risk. How many automated systems have you seen survive a full volatility cycle without curve fitting, and do you have any verified live results?

Happy for you that this has been working for you with gold. At the end of the day, it’s just your approach – some people like layering, some prefer single entries, some don’t touch gold at all. As long as you treat it like a business and understand the risk you’re taking, you’re doing your thing.

I don’t really trade at a fixed time yet. I just check the charts when I’m free. Some pairs definitely move cleaner during the London or NY overlap, but for me it’s more important to wait for my setup than to chase a session.
