Eurozone Consumer Confidence Weakens More Than Expected In August
(RTTNews) - Euro area consumer sentiment deteriorated more than expected in August to a four-month low, after a strong improvement in the previous month, preliminary results of the monthly survey by the European Commission revealed on Thursday.
The flash consumer confidence index for Eurozone dropped to -15.5 from -14.7 in July. The reading was the lowest since April when the score was -16.6. Economists had expected the index to fall modestly to -14.9.
The corresponding index for the EU was lower by 0.3 percentage points from July, at -14.8.
Consumer confidence continues to score well below its long-term average, the EU said. The survey data was collected from August 1 to 20.
The final results are set to be published along with those of the monthly economic sentiment survey on August 28.

German GfK Consumer Confidence To Fall Further
German consumer confidence is set to continue to fall in September as rising fear of job losses weighed on purchase decisions and damped hopes of robust economic recovery, a closely watched survey showed on Wednesday. The forward-looking consumer sentiment index fell to -23.6 in September from -21.7 in the previous month. The reading was forecast to drop moderately to -22.

France's consumer confidence weakened to the lowest level since October 2023 largely due to the weaker outlook for standard of living and the fall in saving intentions. The consumer sentiment index edged down to 87 in August from 88 in July. This was the lowest reading since October 2023 and remained below its long-term average of 100.

German business sentiment hit the highest level in more than two years in August on expectations that the fiscal stimulus would help to kickstart the economic recovery. The business climate index rose to 89.0 in August from 88.6 in the previous month. This was the highest score since April 2024 and also came in above economists' forecast of 88.6. Eurozone Trade Surplus Declines Sharply In June
The euro area trade surplus declined sharply in June as exports remained weak amid a rebound in imports, official data revealed on Monday. The trade balance registered a surplus of EUR 7.0 billion compared to May's surplus of EUR 16.5 billion, Eurostat reported. Compared to last year, the surplus contracted by EUR 13.7 billion from EUR 20.7 billion.

German Industrial Output Declines Most In 11 Months
Germany's industrial production logged its biggest fall in nearly a year in June, data from Destatis revealed on Thursday. Industrial output decreased 1.9 percent on a monthly basis in June, worse than the economists' forecast of 0.4 percent drop. This was the biggest fall since July 2024.Production for May was revised down from the initially estimated 1.2 percent increase.
