TSX Ends Weak For 4th Straight Day

(RTTNews) - The Canadian market ended on a negative note for a fourth straight session as stocks fell on Monday as weak commodity prices triggered sustained selling in energy and materials shares.

The mood was cautious with investors awaiting the Bank of Canada's policy announcement on Wednesday.

The European Central Bank's monetary policy announcement is due on Thursday. Data on US GDP, personal consumption expenditure, jobless claims, and personal income & expenditure are among the major economic reports due this week.

The benchmark S&P/TSX Composite Index ended with a loss of 68.90 points or 0.36% at 19,046.74.

The Healthcare Capped Index dropped 2%. Bausch Health Companies (BHC.TO) ended 3.8% down. The company announced on Saturday that it has received approval from the Food and Drug Administration for Cabtreo, its tropical gel for acne. Tilray closed lower by about 2.8%.

Energy stock Vermilion Energy (VET.TO) declined 3.6%. Crescent Point Energy (CPG.TO), Baytex Energy (BTE.TO), MEG Energy (MEG.TO), Cenovus Energy (CVE.TO) and Imperial Oil (IMO.TO) are down 2 to 3%.

In the materials sector, Lithium Americas Corp (LAC.TO) declined nearly 6%. Torex Gold Resources (TXG.TO), Nutrien (NTR.TO), K92 Mining Inc (KNT.TO), Methanex Corp (MX.TO), Endeavour Silver Corp (EDR.TO), Novagold Res (NG.TO) and Filo Mining (FIL.TO) lost 3 to 4.7%.

Dye & Durham (DND.TO) plunged more than 13%. BRP Inc (DOO.TO) and RB Global (RBA.TO) also ended notably lower.

TFI International Inc. (TFII.TO) shares ended 1.6%. Enghouse Systems (ENGH.TO) and Bomardier Inc (BBD.A.TO) both ended lower by about 3.25%. Emera Inc (EMA.TO) gained 2%.

CGI Inc (GIB.A.TO), Thomson Reuters (TRI.TO), Dollarama (DOL.TO), George Weston (WN.TO) and FirstService Corporation (FSV.TO) also ended notably higher.
