European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she "deeply regrets" Trump's latest tariffs move. "The EU will continue to seek negotiated solutions, while safeguarding its economic interests," she said.

The German DAX tumbled 1.3 percent, France's CAC 40 shed 0.9 percent and the U.K.'s FTSE 100 was down 0.6 percent. Automakers fell sharply on tariff concerns. Stellantis NV tumbled 5 percent, BMW fell 4.1 percent and Volkswagen declined 3 percent.
