TSX Ends Marginally Up After Lackluster Session

(RTTNews) - The Canadian market settled marginally up on Thursday, lifted by gains in materials stocks. Activity was subdued almost right through the day's session as investors largely stayed away on the sidelines, awaiting Canadian and U.S. jobs data, due on Friday.

Trading volumes were thin as U.S. markets were closed today in honor of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who died in late December at age 100.

The benchmark S&P/TSX Composite Index, which moved in a very tight band, ended the day's session with a small gain of 21.68 points or 0.09% at 25,073.36.

Materials shares gained as metal prices climbed higher. Lundin Gold (LUG.TO) rallied nearly 6%. Capstone Mining Corp (CS.TO) closed nearly 5% up. Equinox Gold Corp (EQX.TO), First Quantum Minerals (FM.TO), Aya Gold & Silver (AYA.TO), New Gold (NGD.TO) and Osisko Gold Royalties (OR.TO) gained 3 to 4.2%.

Kinross Gold Corp (K.TO), Lundin Mining Corp (LUN.TO), K92 Mining (KNT.TO) and Teck Resources (TECK.B.TO) also posted strong gains.

Bausch Health Companies (BHC.TO) gained 3%. EQB Inc (EQB.TO), Finning International (FTT.TO), Rogers Communications (RCI.A.TO), Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM.TO), Badger Infrastructure (BDGI.TO), Ag Growth International (AFN.TO), Wheaton Precious Metals (WPM.TO) and K-Bro Linen (KBL.TO) advanced 1.3 to 2%.

Bombardier Inc (BBD.B.TO), Hut 8 Corp (HUT.TO), Quebecor Inc (QBR.A.TO) and Richelieu Hardware (RCH.TO) lost 2 to 2.5%.

Osisko Development (ODV) gained nearly 1%. The company announced the appointment of David Rouleau as Vice President, Project Development. The company also announced that ric Tremblay, Chief Operating Officer, is leaving the company effective immediately.

Endeavour Silver Corp. (EDR.TO) gained more than 2.5%. The company reported a decline in gold and silver production for the fourth quarter. However, the company posted an improvement in annual gold output. For the full year, gold output was 39,047 ounces, higher than 37,858 ounces in 2023.
