Yes. You obviously have to use strict risk management - position sizing, news events, etc, etc.

Totally agree. All my strategies are based around this - finding something that happens in the market over and over again and then creating a strategy to make advantage of this... That is true. That's why you need to build confidence in the strategy first, otherwise you will doubt and give-up when trading live. Confidence can be built by thorough back-testing or by trading demo (or both).

I would never suggest that a new trader open a live account, there is so much you can learn for free by simply trading on a demo account. If you can't make a return trading demo, you won't make a return on a live account. My advice is to create or learn a strategy, trade it successfully on a demo account and then move to a live account. If you don't have the patience to do this, you won't have the patience to make it as a trader - trading is all about logic, patience and discipline. Just my opinion, everyone is different...

It's possible if you have a healthy strategy and you are willing to take the risk i.e any strategies performance can be magnified by increasing position size. Some months may return less than 5%, some months more than 10%, but 5-10% as a monthly average is realistic for retail traders, if you are profitable.
ECN or STP ?

ECN brokers should offer you tighter spreads and an overall better trading experience. In a way, your question is not valid as STP brokers no longer exist in many parts of the world due to regulatory changes. Your only real options when choosing a retail Forex broker are ECN or market market.I hope this helps.

Profitable trading is all about having an edge, sticking with that edge and managing risk. Those that are unsuccessful in trading either have no edge, trade on emotion or don't have strict risk management.
