U.S. Weekly Jobless Claims Inch Up More Than Expected

(RTTNews) - After reporting a rebound by first-time claims for U.S. unemployment benefits in the previous week, the Labor Department released a report on Thursday showing initial jobless claims saw further upside in the week ended January 18th.
The Labor Department said initial jobless claims rose to 223,000, an increase of 6,000 from the previous week's unrevised level of 217,000. Economists had expected jobless claims to inch up to 220,000.
With the increase, jobless claims continued to regain ground after hitting a nearly eleven-month low in the week ended January 4th.

The Commerce Department said new home sales jumped by 1.8 percent to an annual rate of 676,000 in February after plunging by 6.9 percent to a revised rate of 664,000 in January.

Philly Fed Index Extends Pullback But Still Indicates Growth In March
A report released by the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia on Thursday said regional manufacturing activity expanded overall but was less widespread in the month of March. The Philly Fed said its diffusion index for current general activity slid to 12.5 in March after plunging to 18.1 in February, although a positive reading still indicates growth.
