DEMO ACCOUNT vs LIVE ACCOUNT

Jaco, you are so right in what you are saying. EA's without a very strict risk & money management account protection are doomed to fail at one time or the other. I do however think an EA can be profitable as long as you have the rmm protection running in the background if the EA goes out of control. Rmm robots or EA's are needed for the trader to be able to relax. A lot of emotional issues will be eliminated by having a security net for sure.

On a demo account I would agree on this. On a live account it is a concern. If the trading plan is that it can stand a 30% draw down and we are sticking to our trading strategy, no matter what, it can very well be so that it will turn out in our favor at the end.A 30% draw down of a strategy do affect us in one way or the other more in a live account, then in a demo account.

kanon103, I agree what you say, EA and you're kind of out of the manual emotional trading scenario, to some extent, for awhile. The question is, what happens if the EA is going haywire, to make an example a draw down of 30% in a couple of days, and you start thinking, whats wrong? Or do I have to make some changes to the EA to cut the losses? Do this scenario affect us emotionally, yes it does, so EA in the long run is not emotionless.

A very good posting of you "chaviq". It is hard to say if you did extremely well on your demo trading vs. live but as you say the stress level increases when dealing with real money. More mistakes are made both on entry and exit, we are more careful if the positions goes against us and we want to get out asap before loosing too much money, and sometimes we get out too soon, realizing the market did indeed go our way. What is the remedy for this? Sticking to our trading plan and follow it in a discipline way so to speak. Even if we loose by sticking to our trading plan we do get invalu...

Slippage is of great concern in a live account. Spikes and other low down methods from brokers is another one. It all depends on what kind of broker we are dealing with. Market Makers do trade against you and will try to hedge against your positions, hoping you will loose. ECN brokers are more commission based and therefore do not trade against you. It is not all in our heads but emotional pressure will count for a lot of the differences between trading a demo account vs. a live account. Is there a trader who is 100% in control when trading live? No it is not pa possibility and therefore we ha...

I would say, trading a demo accounts too long can in some cases have a negative influence of getting down to the primary, namely trading a live account. The live account do not need to have a large deposit, the most important aspect is that it is "live" and real money is at stake regardless of the account size. When a strategy is proven profitable after a length of time in demo testing mode, live is the final state of getting the assurance it holds up to the expectations. Even after after some time with trading a "live" strategy it might gives us proof that it will not be a...

The demo account is a great tool to learn the inns and outs in a trading platform, there lies the true value of a demo account and testing different strategies before going live is another one. "fxgouveia" there is some adrenaline build up even in a demo account but of course compared to a live account its minimal. How about lets say 10% adrenaline build up compared to a live account, sound like a good round number :).

Yes I agree on your posting. It's definitely a jungle environment. We have to be prepared to encounter all kinds of different scenarios from the broker side and try to protect our self the best we can. That is why it is so crucial to have a backbone with a total protection of the trading account to prevent this from happening.

Is there a safe 4% to be had or is it just a pipe dream? Of course it's a pipe dream. No one can guarantee you a safe 4% profit each month. This would be on the borderline of scamming and giving the trader false promises. Go for a controlled trading environment instead which is based on risk management of your trading account. Then you can actually can receive a safe 4% profit every month but this would be in totally control from your side as a trader and not from any one else giving you direction on how to achieve it.

Hi Umar, you might preform the same in a real live account. The different are some aspects that you should pay attention to though.1. Emotional thinking Live vs. Demo.In a live account you have real money on the line so therefore you will have a natural attachment to your positions made. Are you ready to lose if the market goes against you? Or do you see this as one of many trades where you lose some and win some?2. Revenge thinking. If you are down for the day and are in a position when you feel you know "better" then where the market is heading. Do you buy another position at a lowe...

I agree that traders even when using a small portion of their account they suffer margin calls. Why is the question? The main reason is they do not lock in profit on the upside and they do not minimize the draw down. Experienced traders can take on a higher risk as they know the ins and outs of the market. New traders entering should go for a more controlled risk management.Take a look at this demo account which I am using to test different RMM strategies. The first half part of the chart there is definitely higher risk taken and the rewards are bigger. The second part is extremely controlled ...

Cholipop, thanks for your insight. I do agree to some points of what you are saying. On the whole my opinion is this, it does not matter where the market is heading. The most important aspect of trading is, is one protected enough to withstand any direction the market takes?

Hi Cholipop,A lot of EA's are programmed for taking high risks in the hopes they will reap rewards quickly. Of course sometimes it works and suddenly they have their 1000% profit. Then they go for even higher profit and let the EA run. Because of the risk ratio being so high draw downs will come and they can easily lose the account if they do not lock in the profit. I am for protecting the trading account at all costs so there has to be some kind of account protection not letting the draw downs take control of the account. By having a low expectation instead of a high one you can control b...

There is several reason I say 50% a year should be the goal and not 1000%. By going for 1000% you have to take enormous risks in getting there. Its also emotional unsound to put that kind of pressure on ones trading. I'm not saying that 1000% is impossible to reach, all I'm saying is that it's better to set the bars lower and that anything above 50% is very good. If you have that approach I think you have a better chance of reaching a very high return. It has a lot to do with the psychology of trading.
RMM strategy ( risk & money management )

Protection of individual positions is standard in most trading platforms with stop loss, target, trailing and so forth. What is not discussed and used by many traders is protection of the trading account itself. Why is this so important? It gives the trader a complete risk & money management profile (RMM) with both individual position protection and account protection. When many positions are opened it's hard for the trader to have control on how the trading session is actually progressing. Are we in loss or in profit totally since the session started? When should we stop trading w...
Why 90% of retail traders fail...

The reason most new traders fail is, mainly they lack the insight of risk & money management (RMM). This should be the number one attribute for the trader to learn about. New traders usually put this at the end of their priority list so they end up with being amongst the 90% who fails. Protection right from the start for a new trader is what is needed. I'm going to list two points here that are of importance.Protect the individual positions with a predefined stop loss ( 1% risk of the trading account ) and have a predefined rule on how many positions can be opened at the same time....

Hi Tafadzwa,118.5% on a demo account is very good and it can give assurance that maybe your trading is going on the right track. However going live is a totally different story. Aspect like emotions knowing real money is at stakes creeps in. Will you trade the same on a live account vs a demo, No. You should protect yourself right from the start with proper risk management. Like having a stop loss on every position made, then you have secured yourself on open positions. They are placed on the broker server and will execute even if your own computer loses the internet connection or if there is ...

Hi peeterwoolf,no from my side too. Demo and real live accounts are two different animals. Demo accounts is good for testing purposes only and will give you some valuable information on how a strategy is preforming. Live accounts will give you the insight if the strategy and system is up to par with your expectations.

Hi Professor 53,there have been systems using cAlgo and cTrader but I agree not too many at this point. There will be a change and that is the reason I want to have the ability to search for different platforms.
