The popularity of Metatrader 5 has grown even more in the past months, according to fintech company Metaquotes, as a number of large international brokers adopted the platform and started offering it to their clients. (https://smnweekly.com/2017/02/02/fintech-metaquotes-mt5-brokers-grow-in-number-include-bcs-forex-instaforex-liteforex/) It looks like the measures they took to shoehorn it on the market really had an effect.
That's true. I am checking on demo the MT5 just to be prepared for the future as I believe more and more brokers will start offering it. It seems to have cool features, like for instance to save a chart as a png file in an easy way without screenshots etc. Will continue digging deeper into it.
Mt4 chart - properties - save as picture :)

I have written many MT4 EAs. Is there any free utility that can help port the code to new MT5 (MQL5??) syntax? At least if it can point out non-compatible code, it will be very helpful. Any ideas?

Yes, stops send new update and send only update that fix some problems... so 1-2 years and all change MT4 to MT5
I also think it will be step by step transition over the next couple of years. MT4 fans will discover MT5 and maybe move to it if they don't choose another platform.

Well one of the biggest advantages (apart from being free) of MT4 is that there is a huge database of existing programs fro almost everything. By using mt5 you would loose this advantage.

Hi all! No doubt they will work in offering it from more corridors, that is, they released it to the market like improved version of MT4, probably later they can make some adaptations. There are still some defending MT4 because they are already accustomed to it.
I like the style of @NEEnah. To using it to prepare for the future. That's great!

MT4 is fantastic for decentralized, open and highly unregulated foreign exchange market on a global scale. However, it does not check all the boxes as a platform for other markets. MT5 is more advanced, so the big investment is in mt5 to make it more accepted in the market.

Mt4 is actually not fantastic tool for trading. It has many problems not limited to forced update from metaquotes loosing the control over trades and much more issues like plugin for brokers messing up with traders.
Mt4 is cheap/free tool with very outdated design. But it is the most spread tool.
Fantastic tool is ctrader.

Wow ... I found reading in this thread that many commented that MT4 had features that MT5 did not own. So there are those who prefer MT4, although I give the reason @togr, is already a bit obsolete. And those who prefer MT5. However, thanks to your participation I will investigate a little more about ctrader. I have not had the opportunity to try this tool.

I don't hear much talk about cTrader. I find the fact that it is C# programming particularly attractive. Does anybody have real experience programming and trading cTrader? Could you share some of your comments on that? Stable or buggy? Trade execution? Community of users/programmers using cTrader?
If at some point I have to go thru the trouble of reprogramming my MT4 EA's/tools, I might as well do it in a more "standard" language like C# rather then going into mql5 again. I have never been a big fan of MQL5 anyway, I just program it because I feel I don't have much choice. Lack of choice is another thing which, on principle, I don't like. If other traders prove me wrong ( by showing there is plenty of choice) then I would love that.

I tried cTrader few months ago. Personally I was skeptical to this platform because I was used to MetaTrader 4, but I can truly say that I was wrong. The cTrader platform has superb speed execution, it is easier to use and very easy on the eye. It is also applicable for a wide range of traders. Very good choice indeed.
Accept the loss as experience

@growthera Also cTrader also gives you a good depth in the market because it shows the full range of executable prices that come directly from liquidity providers. And the functionality of its graphics is good, can be adjusted even for the most demanding operations.

Ctrader never can be better, because charge commision for each trade what trader execute... So definitely you pay stupid commision for platform provider and no for broker. Logic broker charge more. So this platform offer only several brokers and MT is more popularized because cost is 0.
This situacion only make visible, like desperate is fx market. For stupid futures trading you can choice from 50 platforms + and for fx from 2 :D and most of this platform look much better and ctrader is from stone age.

Thanks for the answers so far. @wortrader : are you suggesting metaquotes is a company that does not charge it's brokers? How does it pay its employees?
Indeed a shame choice is so limited. Hey, maybe I should start a business creating an FX platform then.... Too bad I'm not really that familiar with the industry of trading platforms.. sounds like an opportunity. I'll stick to trading then.
