Ctrader never can be better, because charge commision for each trade what trader execute... So definitely you pay stupid commision for platform provider and no for broker. Logic broker charge more. So this platform offer only several brokers and MT is more popularized because cost is 0.
This situacion only make visible, like desperate is fx market. For stupid futures trading you can choice from 50 platforms + and for fx from 2 :D and most of this platform look much better and ctrader is from stone age.
there are ctrader brokers without commission
and with reasonable spread same as on mt4

Thanks for the answers so far. @wortrader : are you suggesting metaquotes is a company that does not charge it's brokers? How does it pay its employees?
Indeed a shame choice is so limited. Hey, maybe I should start a business creating an FX platform then.... Too bad I'm not really that familiar with the industry of trading platforms.. sounds like an opportunity. I'll stick to trading then.
Metaquotes is indeed charging brokers for mt4

Metaquotes is not only charging brokers for using MT4 and MT5, but it’s charging them more for MT4 than for MT5 in an attempt to promote MT5. (https://smnweekly.com/2016/12/22/metaquotes-software-hikes-mt4-fees-in-attempt-to-promote-mt5/) The MT4 license costs USD 100 000, while the for MT5 stands at USD 25 000, the monthly subscription fees for MT4 are also higher.

Thanks TiffanyK. Did you happen to do any programming backtesting etc.. ? if yes, any thoughts on that?
I'll certainly give it try....
Hi @growthera, I didn’t do any specific testing. I compared it to MT4 and most of the results were better. As I said – superb speed execution (on Mt4 sometimes the executions are slowing down and cannot find the reason for that), also the functionality is better on cTrader … and many more.

Metaquotes updated MT5 again, adding new features, enabling users to fast switch between windows and change price values with the mouse wheel, announced Russia-based MetaQuotes, the developer of the platform. (https://smnweekly.com/2017/02/20/mt5-makes-switching-windows-changing-price-easier/ )
They’re really determined to develop it.
I don’t know about you, but I am still stubbornly using MT4.

You are right. MT5 is in upswing right now, personally I am using both cTrader and MetaQuotes. It’s up to each trader’s choice

Hello,
They may stop developing, but they will not stop supporting the terminal. Perhaps years may pass, until the MT4 to be stopped entirely.

True, they don’t seem to have abandoned Metatrader 4 completely after all. MetaQuotes said it has launched a coupon service for users of the MetaTrader 4 (MT4) and MetaTrader 5 (MT5) trading platforms. The new service enables brokers to support clients who wish to purchase applications and services for the platforms. (https://smnweekly.com/2017/03/02/metaquotes-launches-free-coupons-for-paid-mt-services/)
Traders can receive from their brokers coupons and use them to try for free MetaTrader services that are otherwise paid.

Thanks for sharing, looks like a cool option for both the MT4 and MT5 fans 😄 especially if these 2 platforms are offered by the broker.

Or maybe there can be some merge between the codes of the 2 so that all is applicable 😄

They cannot simply stop updating it as there are millions of users
They cant leave it open to security threats.
It is like MS is still supporting some older version of Windows with updates. But after some date they stop...

Well I'm busy switching over my MT4 to MT5, just waiting for trades to close. May as well make the move now, get it over with and used to the the MT5 system (again. - I have used MT5 in the past, actually preferred it, but back then it came at premium [higher minimum deposit, wider spreads, etc.]), now that it's becoming the main focus, the terms from brokers seem to fall in line with MT4.
For every loss there should be at least an equal and opposite profit.

Metaquotes announced it has released an updated version of the iOS application for the MetaTrader 5 (MT5) trading platform, which features history of trading positions. Prior to the addition of the new feature, trading history consisted only of orders and deals. (https://www.forexnewslab.com/2017/03/31/mt5-introduces-positions-to-trading-history-on-ios-app/)
The platform builds a single record with all collected historic data on deals related to a position.

Is it a lot of work to convert MT4 EAs to work on MT5?

If you don't have the source file (the mql file) it is impossible. You can drain them down the toilet and send a thank you letter to Metaquotes.

They are under no legal obligation to keep working on it. (It's a FREE PRODUCT for end users.)
They announced they were going to stop working on it in 2015, it is now 2017.
They have another product (mt5) which provides the same type of services for brokers that mt4 provided.
It's been approximately 2 years since they announced they were ending development on it.
I don't know what the specific "end of life cycle" date is, but given the fact that it's a free product to end users, and the fact that they also offer another product which is nearly identical to it (MT5), we might not all like what is happening, but honestly there really isn't much we can do about it.
If it looks too good to be true, it's probably a scam! Let the buyer beware.

If you have the .mq4 source file for your EA then you shouldn't have much of a problem getting it converted to .mq5
