Reading books on the matter is not necessarily a bad choice. Yes, there is a lot of information online, but a lot of its sources are questionable. You don't know how well it's been vetted and by whom. Books by reputable authors that have gone through an educated editor can be very helpful.

It is also helpful to have everything in one consistent source that can be referenced easily

this post seems to be quite outdated, there are a lot of good books out there but if you want to have a little bit of convenience you can switch to eBooks instead (https://www.itrader.com/en/page/ebooks) , so you can read using your mobile device or gadgets wherever you are.

Which books specifically would you recommend to a newbie?
