The composite consumer price index in Hong Kong is calculated on the basis of a monthly survey that is done across the country. The indicator is comprised of 980 consumer products and services that are divided into nine primary groups. Housing accounts for 31.6%, food for 27.5%, and other services (such as education, communication, information, and medical care) for 15.9%. Transportation accounts for 8.5% of the total index, while Durable Goods account for 5.2%, Other Goods account for 4.2%, and Clothing and Footwear account for 3.4%. This was followed by electricity, gas, and water which accounts for 3.1%, and Alcoholic beverages and Tobacco accounting for 0.6%.
