Commitment of Traders (COT) Report 07 August 2012 - Technical Analysis. Speculators continued to be sellers of the USD during the latest reporting period. Their net position is still long versus the currencies analyzed in this report, but the net USD long has been reduced from 309,663 contracts to just 133,074 contracts in the last three weeks.There does remain a very large Euro and SF short versus a long USD position, and there has been a small reduction in the euro short during the past four weeks. In the reporting period ended on July 1st, the aggregate net USD long was reduced by 89.4K contracts, approximately about one third of the previous total long. With the total USD long down to 174,734 contracts, this is the smallest long position specs have had in the USD since the report of May 8 of this year.There continues to be hefty euro/SF shorts against a USD long but these positions are being reduced in an orderly fashion. There has been a steady barrage of conflicting information about the euro during the past week. The euro market was deflated after the ECB President Draghi's press conference, but quickly reversed once Spain announced there was a break through, and lower borrowing rates would be available in the near future.Specifics of such a Spanish bail out have yet to be revealed. Once again currency futures speculators increased their euro and Swiss franc shorts. The total euro short advanced to 204,608 contracts and the SF to 35,035. Since the Swiss National Bank has pegged the franc with the euro, the franc is merely a proxy for the euro. Specs also have a large position, long the DI Index futures contracts. With the market loaded with short euro positions, this might explain Friday rallies in the euro as specs take their money off the table ahead of the weekend.
