I recently setup some dedicated hardware for my live (MetaTrader4) trading account. I have stable power, internet, UPS, etc so the chance of a power or internet outage is minimal.

Given that most VPS providers probably over-provision their hardware, do folks see performance issues? Are there any other major benefits in using a VPS that makes it worth the money as opposed to setting up your own system?

What is a normal or acceptable ping time to the broker server, what are others seeing from their VPS or own home setups?

@Ian81 - I have thought about a VPS but have my own spare mini computer running MT4 and an EA 24/7 (but on the weekends I turn off the EA and do the general maintenance if needed).

Spec wise, it is a Lenovo M93p, Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4570T CPU @ 2.90GHz 2.90 GHz with 8Gb RAM, it does the job.

The ping time for my use case is not that important however, I get between 15-20ms which is fine. If I use the VPS it can get down to 3ms.

I would suggest if that is all you were wanted, just go to https://www.mql5.com/en/vps and compare your broker ping in the search and see if it is quicker and if you are willing to pay the $15 a month for that service as you will need to consider your broker fees and if you can maintain a minimum balance in your trading account to cover the cost (which I am sure you would know).

Thanks @bl4ckp3n9u1n. I have an older Dell R310 server (16gb ram, 2 psu, Xeon X3440 @ 2.53ghz, Win2019) running mine, way overkill, but figured this was the cost effective solution compared to a VPS. I do a similar strategy as yours, let it and the EA run 24/7, doing the required maintenance & patching on weekends.

Thanks for the URL, the site showed ~17ms to my broker server. On the pings, I currently get about ~160ms to the broker server, it doesn't seem to have made any difference with the EA or anything, but it sounds like it could also be alot better. I'll see if I can track the broker server down and see where the added latency is occurring.
