I am just learning how to backtest EA's in MT4, but I don't have a large data set. Also, I have read that MT4 is not the best way to backtest.

Two questions. Where can I get reliable data to use for backtests. And is there a better program to use for backtesting than MT4?

Thanks!

Go to your MT4 >History Center and from there you can download previous datas from your brokerage. Give that a try?

MT4 at backtesting, the results tell yuo nothing about real EA performance
I reccomend to use mt5, it is free and BT results are very close to real trading
It is slow though and mt5 programming language differs a lot from mt4

MT5 works with ticks while mt4 does work only with OHLC

To run the EA on a live trade, a backtesting strategy over the same period will give some different results.

If you put your money at risk, the time you spend checking, rechecking, and rechecking is essential.

You have to spend time trading. Knowledge must be gained. Need to work with backtest formula. It allows you to trade risk free.

Forex is a highly unpredictable market whose direction you can’t catch without relying on strategies. So, you better count on multiple strategies at a time to confirm a signal.
