A survey of more large-scale, state-owned enterprises in China is used to calculate the NBS Manufacturing Purchasing Manager Index, which is used to gauge the performance of the manufacturing sector in that country. A total of five individual indicators are used to calculate the index, with the following weightings: New Orders (30%), Output (25%), Employment (20%), Supplier's Delivery Times (15%), and Stock of Items Purchased (10%), with the Delivery Times index reversed so that it moves in a similar direction to the other indexes. A value above 50 indicates that the manufacturing sector has increased in comparison to the previous month, a rating below 50 indicates that the manufacturing sector has declined, and a value of 50 implies that nothing has changed.

A higher than expected figure should be seen as positive (bullish) for the CNY while a lower than expected figure should be seen as negative (bearish) for the CNY.
