Costa Rica is reliant on fuel imports (11% of total imports) due to a lack of mineral resources in the country. As a consequence, since 1995, the country has been experiencing trade deficits. The electrical components and medical equipment that Costa Rica exports are the country's most valuable exports. The United States is Costa Rica's largest commercial partner (37% of total exports and 52% of imports). Panama, Guatemala, China, and Mexico are among the other commercial partners.

A higher than expected figure should be seen as positive (bullish) for the CRC while a lower than expected figure should be seen as negative (bearish) for the CRC.
