Food and non-alcoholic beverages account for 19% of the overall weight, transportation (18%), and rent and household services (11%) are the most important categories in Costa Rica's consumer price index. Followed by furniture and household equipment account for 9%, restaurants and hotels account for 8.6%, entertainment and culture account for 7%, and miscellaneous goods and services account for 6%. Education (5.9%), clothing and footwear (5.8%), health care (5%), communications (4%), and alcoholic beverages, and tobacco (1%) are among the other categories in the index. As of July 2006, the national index has a 100-point starting point. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) represents the rates and consumption habits observed in the country's 114 urban areas.

A higher than expected figure should be seen as positive (bullish) for the CRC while a lower than expected figure should be seen as negative (bearish) for the CRC.
