Cyprus Balance of Trade
Since Cyprus is unable to produce enough food and fuel on its own, trade has played a crucial role in the island nation's recent economic success. Consequently, fuels, raw materials, heavy machinery, and transportation equipment are all imported at a net positive rate into Cyprus. Cyprus is mostly known for exporting citrus fruits, cement, potatoes, textiles, and pharmaceuticals. T the European Union, which accounts for 50% of all Cypriot trade flows is Cyprus' largest and most important commercial partner, followed by the Middle East, which receives 20% of Cyprus' exports, is the country's second most important trading partner. Due to their historical ties, the United Kingdom and Greece account for the highest percentage of trade within the European Union. Recent discoveries of offshore gas will almost certainly reduce Cyprus' reliance on imported energy and result in a shift in the structure of the country's exports.
A higher than expected figure should be seen as positive (bullish) for the EUR while a lower than expected figure should be seen as negative (bearish) for the EUR.
