Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages account for 54% of the overall weight of the consumer price index in Ethiopia, followed by Housing and Utilities (16.8%) and Clothing and Footwear (5.7%). Among the others are Restaurants and Hotels (5.3%), Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco (4.9%), Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine Household Maintenance (4.7%), Transport (2.5%), and Miscellaneous Goods and Services (2.5%). The remainder of the 4.1% total weight is made up of communication, health, recreation and cultural activities, and education.
A higher than expected figure should be seen as positive (bullish) for the ETB while a lower than expected figure should be seen as negative (bearish) for the ETB.
