Japan Tankan Large Manufacturers Index
Published quarterly in Japan, the Tankan Index of Sentiment at Large Manufacturers, surveys around 1,100 enterprises with a total capital of more than 1 billion Yen. Respondents are asked to analyze current trends and conditions in the business environment and their particular industries, as well as their anticipated business activities for the upcoming quarter and year, in a survey that can be submitted by mail or electronic mail. Measured by subtracting the percentage share of firms that gave negative responses from the percentage share of enterprises that gave positive responses. The indicator fluctuates on a range from -100 to 100, with a value over zero indicating company optimism, a value below zero indicating company pessimism, and a value of zero indicating neutrality.
A higher than expected figure should be seen as positive (bullish) for the JPY while a lower than expected figure should be seen as negative (bearish) for the JPY.
