A monthly construction statistics survey is carried out in South Africa by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA), which collects information on authorized building plans and completed buildings that have been supported by the private sector from the major local government organizations. They claim that they are not always alerted about low-cost housing projects and, as a result, do not include the vast majority of low-cost housing projects. The monthly survey accounts for around 90% of the total value of completed buildings. It is a municipal government institution that is in charge of collecting the statistics data. District municipalities, metropolitan municipalities, and local municipalities are examples of local government institutions.

A higher than expected figure should be seen as positive (bullish) for the ZAR while a lower than expected figure should be seen as negative (bearish) for the ZAR.
