According to the Composite Leading Business Cycle Indicator in South Africa, real economic activity is being tracked to track the movement in which it is moving in real-time. Among the components used in its calculation are: building plans approved, new passenger vehicles sold, commodity price index for main export commodities, index of prices of all classes of shares traded on the JSE, job advertisements, the volume of orders in manufacturing, real M1, average hours worked per factory worker in manufacturing, interest rate spread, composite leading business cycle indicator of main trading partners, business confidence index, gross operating surplus as a percentage of gross domestic product. As of 2010, the index has a base value of 100.

A higher than expected figure should be seen as positive (bullish) for the ZAR while a lower than expected figure should be seen as negative (bearish) for the ZAR.
