United States 5-Year Note Auction
The government's 5 Year Note is auctioned off during the 5 Year Note Auction. Two to 10 years are the maturities of US Treasury Notes. Treasuries are issued by governments as a means of borrowing money to bridge the gap between the amount of money they collect in taxation and the amount of money they spend to refinance current debt and/or raise new capital. If a Treasury Note is held for its full term, the interest rate on the note indicates the return an investor would earn.
A higher than expected figure should be seen as negative (bearish) for the USD while a lower than expected figure should be seen as positive (bullish) for the USD.

After reporting significant increases in new residential construction in the U.S. over the two previous months, the Commerce Department released a report on Wednesday showing housing starts pulled back by much more than expected in the month of August. The Commerce Department said housing starts plummeted by 8.5 percent to an annual rate of 1.307 million in August.
