The problem with this is that it does not protect against sudden and unexpected factors, i.e. recent Swiss devaluation. By the same token I agree with Birrell in that abitrary stops are quite meaningless, and in fact they can be dangerous. Stops should ideally be set slightly beyond nearest support/resistance, or just beyond a system signal (just in case you are not watching the indicators), so that your stops actively support your trading system. The stop value should, ideally, be no more than 2% of the account balance.

All the time!Although far from perfect, employ the ADX (Average Directional Movement) index to help identify ranging or trending price action. If ADX more than 25, market is trending; if below 25, market is ranging. Check multi timeframes as suggested by 007 (I do this constantly prior to market entry).

Hello Migz,Lot size is a bit steep and exposes you to high risk. At 25 lots you are putting up 25% of account capital on each trade, and whilst your results to date show that you are doing well, these are extremely short-term trades. Perhaps the IPO issue is equally a result of current economic woes faced by the US and elsewhere. This is certainly not an area of expertise for me, but from a traders' perspective I would rather trade with a publicly listed broker over a non-listed broker given the added financial scrutiny and transparency imposed on public entities. Just my thoughts!

I am a manual trader and I always use stops, not so much to protect me against adverse price moves, but as part of my money management and lot-size calculation.My stop is based on nearest support/resistance plus a buffer equal to ATR/6. I then calculate pips between stop and current price, then convert to dollars. I apply 2% to my account balance, then divide this value by the dollar value of pips between current price and stop to calculate lot-size.
