Consumption expenditures of both urban and rural families are included in the calculation of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in Kenya. The most significant categories in the CPI are Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (which account for 36% of overall weight); Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas, and Other Fuels (accounting for 18.3%); and Transportation (which accounts for 8.7% weight). Apparel and Footwear make for 7.4% of the overall index, with Furnishings, Domestic Equipment, and Regular Household Maintenance accounting for 6.2%. Restaurants and Hotels, as well as Other Products and Services, account for 4.5%, Communication account for 3.8%, Health account for 3.1%, Education accounting for 3.1%,  Recreation and Culture account for 2.3%, and Alcoholic Beverages, Tobacco, and Drugs accounting for the remaining 2.1%.

Hodnoty vyššie, ako sa očakáva, by sa mali považovať za pozitívne (býčie) pre KES a pod očakávané hodnoty by sa mali považovať za negatívne (medvedie) pre KES.
