They cannot simply stop updating it as there are millions of users
They cant leave it open to security threats.
It is like MS is still supporting some older version of Windows with updates. But after some date they stop...

It looks like they're working on getting the MT4 brokers to update to MT5

I found this page on the Metatrader 4 website.
https://www.metatrader4.com/en/company/362
If it looks too good to be true, it's probably a scam! Let the buyer beware.

They are under no legal obligation to keep working on it. (It's a FREE PRODUCT for end users.)

They announced they were going to stop working on it in 2015, it is now 2017.

They have another product (mt5) which provides the same type of services for brokers that mt4 provided.

It's been approximately 2 years since they announced they were ending development on it.

I don't know what the specific 'end of life cycle' date is, but given the fact that it's a free product to end users, and the fact that they also offer another product which is nearly identical to it (MT5), we might not all like what is happening, but honestly there really isn't much we can do about it.

But you know that they sell even today Indicators and EAs for MT4 on their market. So even if they might not have a legal obligation to continue MT4, it is very unethical to stop the platform just after selling apps for it. But on the legal aspect you are right, there is no law that can prevent a company from committing suicide (only the stockholders could charge them for deliberately destroying value, but that's not my business)

It is not about ethics.
Metaquotes is crappy Russian company, unfriendly to users. They dont give a shit about ethics.
There are still many users using mt4, many brokers paying the fees for MT4.
If metaquotes were about abandon it they would kill golden goose.

I agree with you about the ethics, they're in it for the money.

From a brokerage support situation, (just my opinion of course) I'm guessing they're trying to get all their MT4 brokers to 'upgrade' or whatever to MT5, either that or they might somehow update the MT5 client application to support limited MT4 connectivity or something.

MetaQuotes Software, the company behind the popular trading platforms MetaTrader 4 and 5 said it discontinues the platforms for the oldest versions of Windows – XP, 2003 and Windows Vista after October 1, 2017. (https://smnweekly.com/2017/06/07/metaquotes-ends-support-for-old-versions-of-windows/)

The minimum operating system requirement for MT4 and 5 will be Windows 7.

If by any chance you’re using one of these operating systems, keep in mind that they will be becoming more and more unstable, as will the trading platforms.
