from Silverthorn, 'very rare and becoming even rarer that I am not able to communicate with people in other countries using good old English.'

I also travel a bit and I have also had those good experiences but I have also been just outside Mexico City when my toddler son developed a 104 degree fever. (40 degree Celsius). Couldn't ask for help. You talk about helpless. Everything eventually worked out once we got back to the city but it was touch and go for a while.

Here is another side of the coin that IronMan told me about that I didn't know, it seems that some French refuse to use English at all. With all the ruckus going on now in the middle east, I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few other countries that hate English. How could we use a language to pull everyone together if a sizable portion of the population has an emotional issue with the language. Beside I think if we do nothing Mandarin Chinese will eventually become what English is to day, a default.

We can do better than this. If we change the focus just a little. We can make a language that everyone could accept, easy to learn, comprehensive in its makeup and belongs to everyone on the planet, (not favoring any one group). Beside that, it's fun to make things, I make thinks all the time. This can be like a group hobby. After we are dead and forgotten people will still be using our language to do things we never even dreamed of. We build the infrastructure so those that come after us can use it to build a world.

Did you ever want to start something that you knew you couldn't finish? This takes trust. We are trusting others will help out, we certainly couldn't do anything like this ourselves. We are trusting those that come after us will use our efforts for the benefit of humanity. It's not easy putting your confidence in the hands of others but I do. I trust you, I don't why exactly but I know that I do. I trust humanity, I don't trust government at all but mankind has the same hopes and dreams that I do. So if they do something for their own good, that is my purpose also. So I believe I can trust humanity.

Individuals can do things to harm themselves and others but that's not the way the whole group behaves. So, with your help, my big research project is, what will man do if he has the chance to talk with everyone one else the planet?

I want to convince you, you are naturally skeptical as anyone in the science/engineering field would be. If my reasoning can stand up to your scrutiny, I will have no concerns for any future challenges. So, take it apart, make me work for my supper. Where are we weak, vulnerable? What proof is needed that will help everyone to catch the vision?

What vision? One Planet, One People, One language that unites us. It's a good vision. Now how do we get a following?

Noticing that as others post to other threads, this one gets pushed down and sooner or later will get pushed off the first page. This will happen eventually but we made the announcement here where the idea began as we intended to do. Now however the idea has to grow in its own environment (not everyone in the world is a trader) and really this subject is a little out of place on a traders' forum as it only loosely applies to trading. Therefore, if there are any final questions or comments about our new project, please post them soon.

Bob, I agree with you on human condition but it increasingly looks that tiger cannot change stripes. Most probably we are what we are and majority cannot change.
I also wonder, even if there is one language, still, people who would learn it as a second language would be coming form different cultural background. IMHO, it is not as much about common single language as it comes to ability to communicate clearly.
To avoid misunderstanding and second guesses. I myself always try to write and talk to people as if I deal with imbeciles :) You know, to make sure they understand what I say. As Caesar told once complex words must be avoided like under sea rocks.
I also disagree with Steve that science or technology will resolve issues we face. The issues ar ein our nature and up bringing. Science and technology will only make them worse. Just like ipads and iphones made communication faceless it made people forget what it means to really be with another human beings.
I see often couples where they walk together and instead of enjoying each other they are typing something to complete strangers via their gadgets.
While I commend what yuo are doing I think it is utopian idea. The issues are not in that we do not have common language.
We can have different languages but share same views and then we can find common ground even when our fist languages are different.

HolyCow is back, happy dance...

'We can have different languages but share same views and then we can find common ground even when our fist languages are different.'

Yes, but to share views we need to be able to hear and understand what each other is saying. Any psychologist will confirm that we don't trust things (or people) that we don't understand. Why are Canadians, Australians, New Zealand and England our brothers while Mexico is our friends to the south? We feel closer to those people that we understand.

I have come to call a universal language “Terran” and argue that if we had such a language and if the news was broadcast in both the local and Terran languages, maybe even on the internet, then the rest of the world will hear the pain and understand how each other feels.

What do we got to lose? What is going on now isn't working and this conflict of ideals in the middle east can start another world war. We can't afford that. And a grassroots call for a universal language can disrupt this trend toward violence.

Good to see you back,

I think that's a great idea about Terran. Perhaps Low Gothic? :) But seriously, I don't think ANY universal language, currency, peace, etc, will come about until we have something universal to bring us together as a race, as humans. As wild as it may sound, if, ever, we encounter intelligent life beyond the boundaries of our planet, I think that would perhaps be the push that would eventually have us all singing the same songs.

But we do have something that all humans have in common, the desire for money. It will help business to communicate with foreign markets. To make money, many people will learn the 'business' language which will become the internet language. Right now it is impossible to have a website in every language in the world, or even most of the big ones but one in the native language and one more in an international language is a piece of cake. It will save business money and time.

So while businesses are paving the way, we could find a better way to communicate with others that we don't understand as the true benefit. It is looking like we are going to lose the middle east. This is ugly and getting uglier. A common language may not bring peace but it could help.

The website is down for a few days, just some problems with our hosting service, again. Should be back up in a couple of days.
