The Central Bank's Monetary Policy Committee evaluates whether to adjust the basic interest rate based on the Economic Activity Index (IBC-Br), which is sometimes viewed as a forerunner to GDP figures. The index, which has a base value of 100 as of 2002, measures the performance of the economy's three primary sectors: agriculture, industry, and services.
A higher than expected figure should be seen as positive (bullish) for the BRL while a lower than expected figure should be seen as negative (bearish) for the BRL.
