In Canada, consumer goods accounted for 20% of total imports in 2018, followed by motor vehicles and parts (19%), electronic and electrical equipment and parts (12%), industrial machinery, equipment, and parts (11%), basic and industrial chemical, plastic, and rubber products (8%), metal and non-metallic mineral products (7%), and energy products (6%). Canada's largest trading partners were the United States (which accounted for 64% of total imports), the European Union (10%), with Germany accounting for 3%, China (8%), Mexico (3%), and Japan (2%).
A higher than expected figure should be seen as positive (bullish) for the CAD while a lower than expected figure should be seen as negative (bearish) for the CAD.
