As a result of global trade tensions, imports into Japan fell by 5% in 2019 compared to the previous year's record high. Mineral fuels (22% of total imports), with petroleum accounting for 10% and LNG accounting for 6%; electrical machinery (15%) on the back of telephony, telegraphy, and semiconductors; chemicals (10%) on the back of medical products and organic chemicals; machinery (10%) in particular computers and units; and food products (9%) such as meat and meat preparations; manufactured products (9%) on non-ferrous metals; and raw materials (6%) mainly ore of non-ferrous and iron ore and concentrates. In terms of import partners, Japan's most important partners were China (23% of total imports), the EU (12%), with Germany in particular (3%), the United States (11%), Australia (6%), South Korea (4%) Saudi Arabia (4%), Taiwan (4%) the United Arab Emirates (4%), and Thailand (4%).
A higher than expected figure should be seen as positive (bullish) for the JPY while a lower than expected figure should be seen as negative (bearish) for the JPY.
