Is forex gambling?

Well, now, I wasn't talking about you, per se, but since you're at it, the only way a Martingale will work, and that isn't sure even then, is when the win-% is above 50%, on a RR on 1:1. Otherwise, and perhaps even then, you're doomed. I know you won't agree, so we'll just have to wait and see.

Well, a few things need to be corrected at once. 1. There is no God... Not of any kind. If there was, why would he/she/it let the world be the way it is. Forget it. You'll do yourself a huge favour. According to religions there are over 2000+ gods. One more or less will not make any difference. 2. You will NEVER know in what direction a specific market will go. NEVER. If you enter a trade, it can go EITHER WAY. Period. So, why isn't this gambling? If you have a good system, try it for 200 trades. (Some will, of course, disagree with this number.) A good system will, on a Risk/Reward-rat...

What happened BellaVista507? Did Martingale kill the streak, or was it something else?

Compounding isn't the cause of his losses. It's the way he trades. Please blame the right thing. Compounding needs a functional system otherwise it doesn't work. Just like everything else.

Well, then you must have started with a big enough BR from the beginning. I assume that your non-compounding is very closely linked to the fact that you Martingale... Keeping it safe. For non-martingale strategies, compounding is a good thing. Let's say you start with a BR of £1000. Every trade your risk/reward is £20. (Now, this of course assumes that you have a winning system, otherwise you're fracked either way.)When your BR reaches £1500, you increase your risk to £30. Should it go to $1400, you go back to £20. And so on...And every time your BR increa...

Of course, but after a few weeks, months like that you will compound and increase your stakes? No?

Of course a pullback will happen, but will it be now, or in 200 pips? Some losing trades in between. Oohhh, the information you scalpers use. I know what you mean, and use a bit of price action as well... Not arguing there. We'll see... time will tell. As I said, I wish you look, and will follow your progress with great interest.ppentz: Yes, it is there... you can see it in may last year when it was 1 trade from going bust.

BellaVista: I don't trade for loooooong if you mean I hold on to my trades for long. My point is, in 10000 trades, you will encounter 18 losses in a row. Can you sustain that? That's a good analogy, ppentz. Having been in the roulettebusiness, you'd be amazed how many people think something (Red, Black, Evens etc) is _due_. It never is...

What? Just... what? I don't run any losing positions. They have strict exits. Good luck to you... Since I'm talking apples and you're talking... well, something else, I really don't know from where you are coming. What has anything to do with how I let losing positions run? Geez...

If you don't plan for the long haul, you might as well go with roulette. My example above is the basic criteria to pull martingale of over an extended amount of time, and even that is not a guarantee, as I clearly wrote. Anything else than that will not win. It is that simple. So, we'll talk again in a year or two.. :)

Exactly... "That's because the martingale strategy can hide the underlying weakness of the trading strategy."If it is to be successful in the long haul, it has to 1. Be at 1:1 RR and 2. Win over 50% of the trades. (In which case you will win, wether you martingale or not.)It can still blow your account though.Compare this with roulette, where you are win 47,6% of the time on Red (or Black), unless you play on an american wheel, where you are worse off. Your bank will blow pretty soon anyway. It is just a matter of #spins.

"real Investors split their money into 80-90% safe investments and 10-20% into risk investments."Agreed, but Martingale isn't a risky investment, it's insane. Sure, you've survived since May last year. Not a very long time yet. I wish you luck, though...

Bellavista? How do YOU compound? Or not at all? If you start with a BR of $5000 you NEVER increase your stakes? Even when your BR reaches $100 000? That's so weird I'm beginning to think that I don't know what the word Compound means...

But to answer the question "Is compounding necessary?" it really depends on your bank. If you have $100 to trade with and are happy with $20 in winnings per month, the question is no. But for the 'risk of ruin'-discussions and percentages and so on - If you are trading with amounts that gives you a risk of ruin, you have to much at stake. Someone said that "you should only risk so little that it almost seems like a waste of time to trade". Then you put the stress out and can concentrate on your way of trading.

Unless your win-% is higher than 50% on a 1:1 ratio, you shouldn't even concider this. Roulette has a win-% of 47,6% and it doesn't work there.

Thanks Crazy Trader. Do you ever feel that you have over confidence in the EA, or the system is secure enough?
