US durable goods orders slumped

Expert market comment from senior analyst Alex Kuptsikevich of the FxPro Analyst Team: US durable goods orders slumped
FxPro | Pred 846 dňami

US durable goods orders decreased 6.1% in January after falling 0.3%. The cost of total orders in January was the lowest since September 2022, although it has been quite volatile in recent months due to transportation orders. This was worse than the average forecast of a 4.9% fall.

Excluding transport, the decline in new orders was a modest 0.3%, the smallest since July 2023. The average forecast was for growth of 0.2%, but this figure is flat with just 2.2% over 2 years.

This stagnation stands in stark contrast to a tight labour market and record highs in the stock market. But it would be simplistic to see this as an early sign of recession. For example, the headline and core indices had been contracting since the last quarter of 2018, but it was only the sharp acceleration of the decline in the first lockdown that triggered a recession.

The release halted dollar weakness, adding 0.1% to the greenback and briefly taking 0.2% off the Nasdaq100, as the new report did not add to expectations of a US economic expansion.

Gold – hit from both sides at once

Gold – hit from both sides at once

Gold is back near this month's lows around $4,118, and two forces are pulling it down at once. Iran peace talks remove the safe-haven bid while Fed rate signals undercut the inflation hedge. Central bank buying still puts a floor under the price, but Thursday's PCE report may decide whether the slide continues or gold finally finds a reason to bounce.

Hawkish Fed Supports Dollar as Oil Weakness and Political Risks Pressure Major Currencies | 23rd June, 2026

The US Dollar remained dominant as expectations of a hawkish Federal Reserve supported demand for the Greenback. Improving US-Iran relations and the lifting of sanctions on Iranian oil exports increased global supply expectations, pressuring crude oil prices. Meanwhile, political uncertainty in the UK and weaker commodity markets weighed on the Pound, Canadian Dollar, and Australian Dollar.

A £2 Trillion SpaceX: Extraordinary Vision… or Excessive Faith?

SpaceX may be worth over $2 trillion, but today's revenues hardly justify such a valuation. Investors aren't paying for the current business—they're paying for Starlink, AI, Starship and industries that don't yet exist. The real question isn't whether SpaceX is a great company, but whether reality can keep pace with expectations. At these levels, markets are pricing beliefs as much as fundamentals

Brent – Iran Says It Will Close Hormuz, So Why Is Oil Still Near $78?

Iran threatens to close the Strait of Hormuz — the route for 20% of global oil — yet Brent barely moves, trading near $78. The market already priced out the war premium last week when peace hopes emerged. But if tankers truly stop, a fifth of the world's supply vanishes, and prices can surge within hours. Is the market underestimating Iran's threat?
