U.S. Private Sector Employment Rises Much Less Than Expected In April
(RTTNews) - Payroll processor ADP released a report on Wednesday showing private sector employment in the U.S. increased by much less than expected in the month of April.
ADP said private sector employment climbed by 62,000 jobs in April after surging by a downwardly revised 147,000 jobs in March.
Economists had expected private sector employment to jump by 125,000 jobs compared to the addition of 155,000 jobs originally reported for the previous month.
"Unease is the word of the day. Employers are trying to reconcile policy and consumer uncertainty with a run of mostly positive economic data," said ADP chief economist Dr. Nela Richardson. "It can be difficult to make hiring decisions in such an environment."

U.S. New Home Sales Rebound Much Less Than Expected In June
After reporting a steep drop by new home sales in the U.S. in the previous month, the Commerce Department released a report on Thursday showing a modest rebound by new home sales in the month of June. The Commerce Department said new home sales rose by 0.6 percent to an annual rate of 627,000 in June after plummeting by 11.6 percent to a rate of 623,000 in May.

U.S. Initial Jobless Claims Unexpectedly Dip To 217,000
The Labor Department released a report on Thursday unexpectedly showing another modest decrease by first-time claims for U.S. unemployment benefits in the week ended July 19th. The report said initial jobless claims edged down to 217,000, a decrease of 4,000 from the previous week's unrevised level of 221,000. Economists had expected jobless claims to rise to 227,000.

A report released by the National Association of Realtors on Wednesday showed existing home sales in the U.S. pulled back by more than expected in the month of June. NAR said existing home sales slumped by 2.7 percent to an annual rate of 3.93 million in June after jumping by 1.0 percent to a revised rate of 4.04 million in May.

After reporting a substantial rebound by U.S. consumer sentiment in the previous month, the University of Michigan released a report on Friday showing a more modest improvement by consumer sentiment in the month of July. The University of Michigan said its consumer sentiment index climbed to 61.8 in July after surging to 60.7 in June. Economists had expected the index to rise to 61.5.

New residential construction in the U.S. rebounded by more than expected in the month of June, according to a report released by the Commerce Department on Friday. The Commerce Department said housing starts surged by 4.6 percent to an annual rate of 1.321 million in June after plunging by 9.7 percent to a revised rate of 1.263 million in May.

The Commerce Department said business inventories were virtually unchanged in May after also coming in flat in April. The unchanged reading matched economist estimates.
