U.S. Weekly Jobless Claims Inch Slightly Higher
(RTTNews) - First-time claims for U.S. unemployment benefits crept slightly higher in the week ended March 15th, according to a report released by the Labor Department on Thursday.
The report said initial jobless claims inched up to 223,000, an increase of 2,000 from the previous week's revised level of 221,000.
Economists had expected jobless claims to rise to 224,000 from the 220,000 originally reported for the previous week.
The Labor Department said the less volatile four-week moving average also edged up to 227,000, an increase of 750 from the previous week's revised average of 226,250.

U.S. Existing Home Sales Slump To Nine-Month Low In June
A report released by the National Association of Realtors on Wednesday showed existing home sales in the U.S. pulled back by more than expected in the month of June. NAR said existing home sales slumped by 2.7 percent to an annual rate of 3.93 million in June after jumping by 1.0 percent to a revised rate of 4.04 million in May.

The Commerce Department said housing starts surged by 4.6 percent to an annual rate of 1.321 million in June after plunging by 9.7 percent to a revised rate of 1.263 million in May.

Philly Fed Index Surges To Five-Month High In July
The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia released a report on Thursday showing manufacturing activity in the region unexpectedly expanded overall in the month of July. The Philly Fed said its diffusion index for current general activity surged to a positive 15.9 in July from a negative 4.0 in June, with a positive reading indicating growth.
